Last week I announced the UK’s manifesto for international negotiations on Climate Change at Copenhagen in December.

 For the first time ever the Government is publishing what the UK will be arguing for in the negotiations. We want a deal that is:

• Ambitious – limit climate change to 2 degrees, by making sure global greenhouse gas emissions peak and start to reduce by 2020, and keep on shrinking to reach at most half of their 1990 levels by 2050.
• Effective – keep all countries to their word with strong monitoring, reporting and verification; and let money flow to where it will make most difference by developing carbon markets
• Fair – support the poorest countries to cut their emissions and adapt to climate change.

 The Road to Copenhagen document sets out the UK’s priorities so people can see what we’re pushing for and why.

 We will all be affected by Climate Change, not just in the developing world, but also here in the UK. In Doncaster we have seen the impact of the floods on our community.

The agreement on emissions that future generations need is not in the bag. Every person who signs up to demand action strengthens those of us who want an ambitious deal and puts pressure on those who would settle for a timid one. People really can make a difference.

Our values place us on the right side of the fundamental moral question on climate change: do we care about the legacy we leave to future generations? Those of us who want to see a fairer and more equal world must make our voices heard.
